@applesthehero

I think the free student plans are incredibly predatory actually - now it's easier than ever for a student to have spent all their timing learning their art on software they'll be paying for for the rest of their life

@cathalogrady2331

man I feel privileged being a developer, where basically all the defacto software is not just free, but open source licensed. I can't imagine how it feels to pay that much money just to practice your skills.

@alexmikhylov

Pablo Picasso said “Good artists copy; great artists steal their creative software.”

@spiichkii

my grandma was an architect and made plans for thousands of buildings. after she retired she tried showing me all her project files but her autocad kept showing that stupid skullfuck of a paywall. this video made me feel seen. ty.

@pieseu2048

that's certainly one way of making something for your portfolio

@hbomberguy

This video is really, really good, and I'm SO MAD because my next video is about this exact thing.

It's so exciting that people are really talking about how to deal with the modern tech landscape before it kills us. A million Autodesk users are gonna watch this and go 'I thought it was just me.'

@Runergy

sometimes you come across an actual captivating video on this platform and you get that feeling again.
somebody cooked and it turned out delicious

@WannabeCanadianDev

Super Eyepatch Wolf sends his regards and praises. Also the whole Flash segment is super charming.

@SnoozyYaLoozy

Y'know this is why I'm on the side of "Piracy is not theft" if creative software licenses keep perpetually being unobtainable for most artists.

@NourArt02

Flow winning the Oscar gave me hope that there is a place for open source software in this industry, Blender has come a long way, and with our help it might overcome 3DS and Maya

@GameUnionTV

Whoa, this escalated quickly! IMO: Blender is unbelievable and should be the first choice for any young artist these days. Also, a few days ago GIMP 3 has been released with non-destructive editing support. Which allows for many users to abandon Photoshop for casual usage.

@wormisjunkd

Dawg my dad is an established professional autodesk goon (not like that) and makes good money with it. And I STILL pirate that shit for him. At a certain point, piracy of these products goes from morally neutral to the only way to protest these practices while still retaining access to the software your work and livelihood is slaved to. I’m proud to help him and myself avoid giving these guys a cent. The market has got to collapse, it can’t continue like this, it’s genuine extortion

@Katy133

Autodesk's "Flex Pricing" plan sounds utterly diabolical. 💀

@TheStarStreak

Hey, senior software engineer here. This is exactly why I am so careful with the license of my dependencies and tools. I know that with proprietary licenses it's always a question of when, not if, they screw it up. Every. Single. Time. It's why whenever there is an open source option I will opt for that, because I know that almost regardless of what happens I can continue using the version I am dependent on. If they change anything against the wishes of the consumers it will just be forked, exactly like with OpenTofu. Same idea with open standards.
These issues you bring up here really plagues all software though with the learning curve of creative software I understand why it's so bad. The big corporations realize it as well, that's why all their tech is built upon open source and open standards. They know proprietary dependencies are shit.
Great video!

@theminecraft4202

yo ho yo ho, a pirate's life for me ...

@bophi_true

The ending of your video reminds me about what Huey asked his granddad,

"What do you do when you can't do nothing, but there's nothing you can do?"

And his grandad responds,

"You do what you can."

@MorgueParfington

over an hour of 3D woes? in 3D? incroyable!

@Combine_Kegan

I felt such a deep sense of revulsion and anger at that token system. This really was a great video, it feels like it's serving so many roles as a vent piece, an informational video, and a call to action. Thank you.

@albertogregory9678

Also the characterization of “business wife” is spot on. They don’t care, none of the suits actually care about anything except making money for themselves, which usually means making money for the company. The cruelty is not out of evil or sadism, its because they have a nice dinner reservation that night. Places to be, people to hurt.

@disasterjones5798

I have gotten into the rather unfortunate habit of looking for "background noise," things I can put on while I'm more physically engaged (chores, sewing, etc). I had seen this video recommended a few times, and today I thought, "maybe it's good background while I work on this set of patches." I turned it on, picked up my thread, and then the video was over. I never put needle to fabric the entire time. Utterly enraptured by your art style, the creative vision, the history, your wit.
This is quite possibly one of the most concisely comprehensive documentaries on a subject I've ever encountered. I see myself as something of an "ex-artist" because my graphic arts knowledge has long fallen obsolete, and I never had the capital to keep up with the changes in the industry. But there was a palpable feeling of comradery and bone-deep understanding that I haven't felt in over a decade, and bittersweet though it is, I'm grateful for the catharsis.
Thank you for continuing even when it feels like the whole of the corporate world is against you. My life is richer for having witnessed your work.
